Learning from Experience ‘the best type’

I recently attended the Australian Cinematographer Societies Master Class with Andrew Lesnie ACS ASC (next to me in the images) – Andrew is the Director of Photography responsible for The Hobbit & Lord of the Rings (all movies), I am Legend, King Kong, Doing Time for Patsy Cline, Babe and a host of others.

Through the day teams of 3 were given 2 actors, a gaffer / grip and set to do with as we pleased, 1 hour to block, light, setup and then, shoot our scene in front of everyone.  The first image is me watching the actors during the take, with Andrew and one of the set assistants watching the camera monitor, the second image is myself discussing the methodology behind doing the scene as we did.  The third is ‘the future of Australian cinema’ as the photographer quipped

I encourage anyone who is interested in the look of films and being a DOP / Cinematographer, AC or such to join the Australian Cinematographers Society / Australian Cinematographers Society Victoria Tasmania – whether you are a student or already working.
