I’ve been doing broader research into organisational structure as a follow on from the Gary Hamel event I went to in early December (‘What matters NOW’ – c/o American Chamber of Commerce in Australia). Gary’s book ‘The Future of Management’ was an early read of mine that struck a chord.
How difficult would it be for a person in your organisation to get the money required to buy a chair? It’s a great question that stuck in my head and I’ve always thought adding more layers of bureaucracy was asinine to creating more resilient organisations.
A friend put me onto this video which goes into a lot of what Gary was talking about – If you don’t have 50 min, watch 11:00-12:30, then 39:45-41:00 then 22:49-38:05 – he also referenced David Guests ‘t-shaped professional’ concept which comes through in the Valve talk.
This ties into Hamel’s speech and you can see several photos I took during the day below – Gary referenced Morning Star alongside Gortex and you can see a short video from Morning Star I found, a more expansive view of the concepts from the people involved than the Valve talk.

All these references point out it starts with hiring the right people and the job of those people is to hire other great people as their primary endevour. With that aside, is it worth gutting an existing system to prepare for a new track? Maybe..
